Sourcing vintage clothing for Etsy
Updated
Source Etsy vintage clothing by establishing age before calculating resale value. A low-cost lot is not useful for an Etsy vintage shop if you cannot support the age of the individual pieces you intend to list.
Use Etsy's age rule as a buying requirement
Etsy's vintage policy requires items to be at least 20 years old and may ask sellers for information about age and sourcing. Its reselling guidance distinguishes qualifying vintage from general resale. Policies checked October 28, 2026.
In October 2026, a general “2000s” mix can include garments that do not yet meet that age threshold. Verify individual age rather than converting a broad decade label into a claim about every item.
Ask for evidence you can retain
| Buying question | What to request |
|---|---|
| Claimed era | The supplier's basis for dating the garments |
| Labels | Clear brand, care, union or manufacturing-label photos where present |
| Construction | Images of relevant fastenings, seams and garment details |
| Provenance | Available sourcing records or original documentation |
| Mixed inventory | A clear separation between dated vintage and uncertain or modern pieces |
No single tag, stitch or fastening proves age across every brand and garment. Compare multiple details and avoid a precise date when your evidence does not support one.
Choose the right supply route
Handpicking can give you time to inspect labels and construction before purchase. An online lot needs enough images and a written description to assess its age mix. Estate and collection purchases may have useful context, but a previous owner's account still needs evaluating.
Compare US vintage suppliers. Ask whether a supplier's category includes modern secondhand, reproductions or vintage-inspired pieces. Those descriptions are not interchangeable with qualifying vintage.
Separate deadstock from vintage condition
Unworn clothing can be old enough to qualify, or recently manufactured. It can also have storage marks, fading or degraded elastic. Record age and condition separately; original tags do not settle either question on their own.
Use the condition and deadstock guide and budget for inspection and preparation. Exclude pieces with unresolved age from the number you expect to list as Etsy vintage.
Price only the usable, eligible batch
If a hypothetical $360 delivered lot contains 30 garments but only 18 have supported age and suitable condition, those 18 absorb $20 each if the remaining stock has no recoverable value. If you can sell the other pieces elsewhere, model that recovery separately rather than assuming full retail revenue.
Then account for preparation, current selling costs and your time using the pricing guide.
I'm sourcing [categories] with evidence they are at least 20 years old. Please separate modern and undated pieces, explain the dating basis, and provide label, condition and actual-lot photos before quoting a delivered total.
Stockhouse accepts sourcing requests ahead of launch, but lots and purchases are not live yet. Its planned vintage and secondhand marketplace does not imply that every future lot will qualify for Etsy. Stockhouse is independent of Etsy.
Questions
- How old must clothing be to sell as vintage on Etsy?
- Etsy requires vintage items to be at least 20 years old. Check the individual garment's age; a supplier's vintage or Y2K category label does not establish that every item qualifies.
- Can I buy wholesale vintage clothing and resell it on Etsy?
- Etsy permits qualifying vintage items under its seller standards. A wholesale order still needs inspection: each item must meet the age requirement and other applicable policies, and your listing must describe it accurately.
- Is deadstock clothing automatically eligible for Etsy?
- No. Deadstock describes unused or unsold stock, not age. Newer deadstock does not become vintage because it has tags or an older-looking design.
