Stockhouse vs Facebook groups

Updated

Facebook has hundreds of groups for vintage wholesale, bales and "pacas", plus Marketplace listings for lots near you. They're busy and often local. They're also mostly paid off-platform, which is where buyers lose their protection.

Stockhouse is opening to founding buyers and sellers across the US. Everything below about Stockhouse is how buying and selling work when lots go live.

The short version

Stockhouse Facebook groups and Marketplace
Who you're buying from Vetted US businesses Group members and Marketplace sellers
How you pay Through Stockhouse Usually PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or cash
Protection Payment held until the lot arrives; covered if it isn't what you were sold Purchase Protection only with Facebook checkout; not local pickup, Messenger or peer-to-peer payments (Facebook)
What you know before paying Piece count, Stockhouse grade, photos and the mix A post and whatever you ask in comments
Track record Two-way ratings after every order Group reputation and admin rules
Reach Sellers across the US, shipping tracked Often local; shipping varies

Where Facebook groups work

  • Local pickup. You can see and handle a lot before you pay, which beats any photo.
  • Deals. Liquidations, store closures and one-off lots turn up here first.
  • Community. Good groups have admins who remove bad sellers and members who call out scams.

Where they don't

Most group deals are agreed in comments or Messenger and paid by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or cash. Facebook's Purchase Protection covers purchases made with Facebook checkout, and excludes local pickup, Messenger payments and peer-to-peer payment methods (Facebook). If a shipped bale turns up short, damaged or nothing like the post, you're arguing with a stranger.

What Stockhouse does differently

  • Every seller is a US business, approved after vetting. Buyers and sellers link the social accounts and platforms they sell on, and rate each other after every order.
  • Listings show the piece count, a Stockhouse grade, photos and the mix, so you know what's inside without driving to see it.
  • You pay Stockhouse, and the payment is held until the lot arrives. If it isn't what you were sold, you're covered. It doesn't cover a change of mind.
  • Post a request for the style you need and sellers make offers.

Questions

Does Facebook Purchase Protection cover wholesale bales bought in groups?
Only if you pay through Facebook checkout. Facebook excludes local pickup, payments made in Messenger and peer-to-peer methods such as PayPal and Venmo, which is how most group deals are paid.
Are Facebook vintage wholesale groups worth it?
They're a good way to find local sellers and pickup deals. The risk is paying a seller you don't know with no protection. If you use them, pay by a protected method or inspect the lot in person.
How does Stockhouse compare with Facebook groups?
Stockhouse sellers are vetted US businesses rated after every order, lots list a piece count, a Stockhouse grade, photos and the mix, and payment is held until the lot arrives, with cover if it isn't what you were sold.
